“I want to start my own small business and sell something, but, sweet lord, I just don’t know what.”
No need to worry.
Over the last few years, I’ve tried out many different side hustles, including selling crafts (soap, jewelry and painted jeans) online.
The ideas of what crafts I want to sell always just kind of come to me.
*cough cough* except for the times I steal the ideas from Pinterest *cough*
But if you’re in need of some inspiration, I’m here to inspire you. Not to sound cheesy or anything.
So today, I would like to introduce to you my TOP 7 unique crafts that you could sell through Etsy or on your own personal website.
#1: handmade candles
Ok, yeah, selling candles probably isn’t the most original small business idea. Thousands of people are trying to sell their mediocre handmade candles online.
BUT.
It’s all about whether you can come up with your own unique touch to it.
For example, here’s a small business that these awesome spooky candles that I sure as hell would want to buy: Cesarah’s Spooky Shop.
Here are some more unique-ish candle ideas:
- body sculpture candles
- candles in a wooden tray that you can afterwards use as a bowl or something
- coffee candles (hell yes!)
- candles that are more sarcastic than Chandler Bing
#2: clothes and accessories with your designs
Are you a creative soul?
Boy have I got good news for you.
You can create your own designs (whether it’s funny comics or cute drawings), slap them on shirts, hoodies, tote bags, mugs, etc., and sell them on Etsy or even your own website.
Oh and, btw, this doesn’t mean you have to get tens of your products ready at home, waiting to see if somebody will ever decide to buy.
You can take advantage of print on demand sites like Printify: as implied, you don’t need to purchase anything before there’s actual demand.
#3: bathtub trays
Ok, this is one of my favorites.
When you have the few tools needed for this, it’s so easy to make a bath tray out of a long wooden board – you just need to sand it down, cut a few holes and give it a nice finish, perhaps add some paint.
That’s how you turn $10 into over $70. (Just look at how much bath trays are selling for on Etsy.)
#4: crochet tops
Damn, doesn’t that look cute?
By no means would I ever be able to make something like that. But if you’re more artsy-craftsy, take this opportunity and make some sweet $$$.
Of course, this would require many hours of work, but I mean, the yarn costs almost nothing, so this would be great for anyone who has time, but not money.
#5: restored furniture
The plan is simple:
- go to a thrift store, a flea market, or a garage sale
- search for furniture that you could fix up and make pretty
- buy furniture
- fix up furniture
- take pretty photos of furniture
- list furniture online
- wait for someone to buy furniture
- celebrate with an ice cream
Usually, anything that is vintage, wooden, or in cool colors will sell well.
Have a look-see on Pinterest to get inspiration for making awesome custom furniture.
#6: painted denim
Did you know you can paint clothes yourself?
Yeah, but not with just regular paint (that would start cracking), but with fabric paint (or acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium).
I have tried this out myself – I got the idea when seeing some video like ‘painting my own lightning jeans’ on Pinterest.
My first pair of jeans didn’t come out exactly as I’d imagined. The coat of paint was way too thick, giving the jeans the look as if it the paint had been smeared on by some newbie wannabe painter (which I was).
But the second pair came out surprisingly good.
#7: macrame
These majestic macrame wall decors are selling for over $80 on Etsy.
And again, yarn doesn’t cost that much – it’s time to make some macrame art.
CONCLUSION
Well, that’s it for today. 7 unique crafts to sell on Etsy, or your own website.
If you decide to go for any of them, make sure you write to me and tell me how it’s going!
